New Cairo/Book Club

On Monday, June 10, 2024, New Cairo IWC hosted its sixth and final book club event for 2023-2024 under the theme “Shine a Light.” The event was a collaborative effort by the IWC of New Cairo, led by Mrs. Nihal ElBakry, the IWC of Nasr City, led by Mrs. Sherine Arafa, and the Rotary Club of Nasr City, led by Mr. Helmy El-Saeed. The highlight of the gathering was a discussion with Professor Dr. Osama Al-Shazly about his book “Gog and Magog and the End of the World.”

The event was honored by the presence of Mrs. Mona Abu Al-Futouh, Chairman of D95; Mrs. Amina Hanna, D95 Honorary Secretary; Mrs. Reem Nazih, D95 International Organizer; and Mrs. Hala Hagras, Past D95 Chairman, alongside members of the Book Club, the Rotary Club, and the New Cairo and Nasr City Clubs.

Dr. Osama Al-Shazly delved into the references to Gog and Magog and their encounter with Thul-Qarnain, as documented in the Holy Qur’an and prophetic Hadiths. He offered interpretations suggesting that Gog and Magog might symbolize significant natural events like volcanic eruptions and tsunamis anticipated before the Day of Judgment, possibly representing volatile volcanic lava rising above the seas.

Dr. Al-Shazly also discussed the qualities of Thul-Qarnain, highlighting his strong faith, devotion, justice, and deep connection with his people. Thul-Qarnain is depicted as a ruler who understands reality, shows perseverance and loyalty, and is a good communicator and truthful. According to the Quran, he traveled to the western end of the world, where he witnessed the sun setting in a muddy spring. Dr. Al-Shazly attempted to draw connections between Thul-Qarnain’s observations and their relevance to the present.

At the conclusion of the gathering, Mrs. Nihal ElBakry, the club President, expressed her gratitude to Dr. Osama Al-Shazly and presented him with a meaningful gift on behalf of the attendees. She warmly thanked the District 95 chairman for attending and expressed anticipation for future delightful meetings, encouraging continued participation in the book club.

Following the meeting, a surprise birthday celebration was held for Mrs. Reem Nazih, the international organizer of D95. Thanks were extended to Mrs. Hala Hagras for providing a delicious cake, and everyone joined in to wish Mrs. Reem Nazih a fantastic year filled with joy and blessings.
