A Journey Through 150 Years of Egyptian History:
Inner Wheel Club of Gezira Sporting under the presidency of Mrs. Ghada
Khalil Hosts Al-Ahram Journalist Samir El-Ghazouly
Under this year’s theme, “ Grow and Flourish,” , , on Sunday, 18
October 2026, at the club’s discussion hall in Gezira Sporting Club,
Zamalek.
Mr. El-Ghazouly delivered an outstanding cultural lecture, taking the
audience on a fascinating journey through 150 years of Egyptian history.
Through a remarkable collection of historical photographs, he revisited
significant events and milestones, bringing to life memories of Egyptian
society across different eras.
The lecture explored various aspects of Egypt’s royal history,
featuring photographs of the Royal Family from the reign of King Fouad
through the era of King Farouk. The audience viewed images of Queen
Farida, Queen Fawzia, and Queen Faiza, alongside photographs documenting
royal processions and the traditions and lifestyle of the period.
Mr. El-Ghazouly also presented historical photographs of Cairo’s
streets, bridges, and renowned hotels, including the historic
Shepheard’s Hotel, formerly associated with Opera Square, and the
InterContinental Hotel. These images illustrated the architectural and
urban transformations that have shaped the capital over the years.
The journey continued with photographs of the Pyramids, revealing how
the Nile’s waters once reached areas close to them and highlighting
the changes in Egypt’s landscape. Other memorable images documented
the High Dam, the funeral procession of the late President Gamal Abdel
Nasser, and the legendary Egyptian singer Umm Kulthum. Particular
attention was given to Umm Kulthum’s patriotic role and her
contribution to supporting the national war effort following the
setbacks of 1967.
The lecture stood out for its wealth of historical information, careful
documentation, and Mr. El-Ghazouly’s engaging storytelling. By
combining historical knowledge with the vivid imagery of the past, he
opened a window onto bygone eras, bringing their people, events, and
defining moments to life and highlighting their enduring influence on
Egypt’s national identity.
The gathering was warmly received by all attendees, who appreciated the
opportunity to revisit important chapters of their country’s history
and discover fascinating details of Egyptian life through an exceptional
photographic archive.
At the conclusion of the event, the members of Inner Wheel Gezira
Sporting Club expressed their sincere appreciation to Mr. Samir
El-Ghazouly for his remarkable presentation and the considerable effort
devoted to collecting and documenting these historical photographs. They
praised his engaging style, which made the lecture both intellectually
enriching and thoroughly enjoyable.
