IWC of Zamalek in a trip to the old Fatimist and Mamlouks City of Cairo
Within the framework of the program “Know your Country” that the Inner Wheel Club of Zamalek has been undertaking for several years now, members of the club presided over by Mrs. Hoda Malash and in partnership with Rotary Palm Hills club have arranged a very special and cultural trip to the old Fatimist and the Mamluks City of Cairo and we were accompanied by the famous writer Reem Bassiouni who wrote several books about the Fatimists and Mamluks periods.
The meeting point was Bab Zoweila known as Bawabet el Metwalli.
From there we moved to Al Moayed Sheikh Mosque and where the writer gave us a long and extremely rich lecture about that place which was at first a big prison. Al Moayed Sheikh was imprisoned there when he was young and spent several years. He had sworn that if ever he gets his freedom, he will get down from that prison and build a mosque in the same place. This is what exactly happened when the Mamluks came into power and made him a Wali he did what he promised himself to. The mosque then became a place for learning and several other things.
Then we crossed the street to El Saleh Talae Mosque most probably the last Fatimist mosque.
The trip ended there. It was really extremely interesting as many of us didn’t know much about these lovely places in our country
